The Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) of the Ministry of Finance is preparing to pursue outstanding tax liabilities abroad as one of its key agendas for 2027. The effort will involve strengthening tax cooperation with tax authorities in other countries.
Director General of Taxes Bimo Wijayanto said the cooperation will cover both bilateral and multilateral relations, particularly through mechanisms for mutual assistance in tax collection and tax law enforcement.
According to Bimo, international cooperation is needed to support the collection of outstanding tax liabilities across jurisdictions. The mechanisms include mutual assistance in legal matters and tax collection.
“The implementation of global tax arrears collection will be carried out within bilateral and multilateral frameworks, including mutual assistance in legal matters as well as mutual assistance in tax collection,” Bimo said during a hearing with House of Representatives Commission XI at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (Sept. 7, 2026).
However, Bimo did not disclose the number of overseas taxpayers that will be targeted for collection efforts in 2027.
In addition to cross-border tax collection, the DGT is preparing a number of programs to strengthen state revenue and tax oversight. One of these initiatives is the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure within the DGT.
The DGT will also develop a tax crime handling system to support the handling of tax-related criminal offenses, as well as an asset recovery management system to strengthen asset recovery efforts. Law enforcement cooperation will also form part of the agenda.
Meanwhile, the DGT will strengthen cross-border information exchange on financial transactions and crypto assets. The government is also preparing pilot programs for tax compliance assurance and a cooperative compliance mechanism.
Oversight of businesses operating in the digital economy will also remain a focus. The DGT will continue implementing and evaluating its oversight approach for the sector.
To support these programs, the DGT has proposed a 2027 budget ceiling of IDR 6.27 trillion. The proposed allocation comprises IDR 1.20 trillion for the state revenue management program and IDR 5.06 trillion for the management support program.
The proposed budget ceiling is higher than the DGT’s 2026 budget of IDR 5.63 trillion.
